BRA DAY!
Bra Day!
If you are a mom of little girls, this is for you!
I remember going through puberty and it was totally awkward! Getting my period, shopping for a bra, weird conversations with mom, health class. UG! I mean if it wasn’t for Judy Blume and “Are you there God, It’s me Margaret?” I would have been totally clueless!
So I decided when I had kids, I would add the word puberty to their vocabulary in an effort to make the transition easier. When they asked why I put deodorant on I said, "Oh, you'll need to use this when you go through puberty." When they asked why I had hair on my "butt" I was say, "Oh that happens when you go through puberty."
I'll never forget the laughter from the bathroom stall when my daughter was 3 and exclaimed, "Mom you had puberty." What a moment! But she was learning and that was good. And my plan to make it less awkward…was working.
In the last few months, I noticed my oldest starting developing a bit and I thought I'm going to buy her a couple sport bras for an extra layer in case we need them. They would be in her drawer and it won't be an event when she needs it, it will be more of a casual transition.
About a month ago she said, "Mom, I think I should wear one of those bras with this shirt". I replied, "Yeah, I think that would be a good idea to have an extra layer with that shirt, it's a little thin."
Then today happened! We were in the store and she said, "Mom, I think I need more bras." Yes, I agree!
And off we went to the bra aisle. My favorite was when we were discussing which style and she said I like the ones with thin straps, but they hurt. My reply...welcome to the rest of your life.
Don't make growing up any harder than you have to for your kids. It's awkward enough! Love this book too, "It's great to be a girl" by Dannah Gresh.
